Gearing up for the rest of summer and fall/holiday sales, there is a lot of planning ahead to do.
Mt. Airy Day in May 2015 was a success; and I will be returning to "Art for the Cash Poor" #16
at the Crane Building 1400 N. American St., in Lovely Fishtown Philly, this weekend June 12 5-9pm, and June 13&14, 12-6 pm. Newest design so far --for the young and young at heart, I think.
At the Philadelphia Waldorf School Holiday sale last month, a young boy approached
my table looking wide-eyed at all my shirts, clearly engaged. His mom then informed me
he liked cows and asked if I had a cow shirt. Unfortunately at that time I did not, and I do prefer my subjects to evolve into my design stock organically... but I continued thinking about this idea, since I like cows myself, have been thinking alot about them recently in general; and also, the comet probe
had just landed. I thought about making a cow on a comet, but the comet images from the probe that I saw looked entirely too rugged. Then I remembered the nursery rhyme, “Hey Diddle Diddle, the Cat & the Fiddle”--- with the cow jumping over the moon--- and figured that would be a good enough celestial body to include with my cow! This image started out as very small ballpoint pen sketch on the back of an envelope, came together quickly and had hopes of becoming a woodcut. Right now it is a screenprint for purposes of fabric-printing efficiency.
These will also debut this weekend at the Mt. Airy Art Garage holiday sale. I plan to have a good range of kid's sizes --3T (smallest size this image will fit on) up to Youth XL, and some adult sizes too--and ladies tank tops will be ready for the summer.
In the meantime, Happy early Winter Solstice!Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-1501514931980720552014-12-18T14:23:00.000-08:002014-12-18T14:25:51.402-08:00The Raven : Corvus Corax

Here is my new Raven shirt, complete with the bird's scientific name, Corvus Corax.
(so as not to be confused with others of the Corvid family).
Ravens are mythologically significant; they are also very intelligent birds.
I thought it a fitting subject to be included in my inventory!
This is a 2 color print, with a pale aqua spot tone and a black ink key image; it looks good on
blue-ish fabrics as well as orange-rust and mustard shades, which really show the blue layer to advantage.Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-66061282693277379662014-12-17T14:20:00.000-08:002014-12-18T14:24:04.627-08:00more Silk Scarves/Holiday 2014

I've been busy working on some new things this fall of 2014 (as well as attending various local sales events)-- one of which is New Silk Scarves! These have been hand-dyed and discharge-printed with my current scarf patterns. I have also started dyeing and printing silk Infinity (circle) scarves, which is a great find to be able to offer, along with my desirable cotton ones.
This one is a black-green shade; this particular black dye discharges to a green-blue. I have other colors available too.
The above is a blue silk, a color that has been popular with customers with my newest leafy discharge-print pattern.
These will be available at the Mt. Airy Art Garage Holiday Sale this weekend 12/20 and 12/21
the warm grey-ish middle scarf and the medium blue scarf at right are both double-dye/dual design Discharge print experiments, featuring my stripe discharge print enhanced with a plant-like pattern print on top. They were fun to do but took longer.
AiryThis Spring in Philly finally got underway (so welcome after the past winter) and with it art sales were good. Mt. Airy's "Mt. Airy Day" was an awesome kickoff (thanks to my customers, old and new!) This weekend I will be at "Art for the Cash Poor 15" at the Crane Building, 1400 N. American St., Phila.---both Sat and Sun.,12-6pm.
In July, August and September, I will be back at the Wyck House in Germantown for their "Behind

Then really it becomes back-to-school and ramp-up for Fall and holiday art sale times.
Above is one of my new silk scarves, I've been experimenting with new dye for silk.
Below are my yoga Tanks which are featured for summer at the Mt. Airy Art Garage.

New Scarf I just finished last night. This is a lovely red-violet-ish shade I came up with
(not a commercial dye shade, so it is very limited edition). This leafy pattern really seems to work
best on the woven cotton scarves, so I think I will only be putting it on that style (not the infinity jersey style scarves). I like its primitive folk-art appearance. My goofy cat, Max-orange, in the top photo, has appointed himself as my photo stylist, and can often be found on my lap while I am trying to work on something else!
• Late Addition to my Holiday Sale roster----on Wed., 12/18/13 5-8pm, I will be at the Fall semester Book Party with a selection of my wares, in Uarts CBS Auditorium, 320 S. Broad St., (Hamilton Hall) in Center City Philly.
Now that November craft sales have wrapped up, I have a short breather this coming weekend after Turkey Day (Thanks to all my customers, old and new, especially at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia! Awesome sales there!)... I will be at the Northwestern Stables Holiday sale (120 Northwestern Ave., Phila., PA 19118) on Saturday 12/7/13 from 10a-4p. The historic barn will be all decorated for the holiday and there will be plenty of equine-themed fun plus education about the stable and its horses; besides all the cool craft vendors set up with their wares on the ground floor in the stable, as well as in the large 2nd-floor former hayloft (where I will be).
This should be a great event, since the Valley Green Inn at the Wissahickon Creek has their Wreath Decorating event happening, in addition to the Chestnut Hill Holiday House Tour, at the same time! Lots of people converging on the lovely Fairmount Park Wissahickon Valley area, as winter approaches.
Proceeds of the Stable craft sale benefit the riding lesson program, and help keep the hardworking lesson horses in carrots, oats and new shoes! This cause is close to my heart, as I got to do some riding there in Summer of 2013 after a VERY Loooong hiatus from being in the saddle----did it when I was a young'un; have wanted to get back to riding again since forever!
I made a special new design for this sale too. (Photo above). It depicts “Doc,” the horse I rode for the summer lesson sessions---he was very patient with me getting back into riding shape, so I thought he deserved to be the subject of a T-shirt!
So, I am psyched!! {Thanksgiving vacation will be spent busily printing, among other things...}.

I will also be back at the Mt. Airy Art Garage in my neighborhood for the final installment of their Holiday sales series----on 12/14 and 12/15/13--12-6pm. Last call for getting those awesome artist-created holiday gifts!!Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-68971500330495978772013-11-11T14:30:00.002-08:002013-11-26T18:25:22.862-08:00Upcoming Holiday 2013 Sales

But, I will be setting up some super-cool art/craft sales venues,
just in time for back-to-school and lovely cooler fall weather;
On deck so far:
•Saturday 9/7/2013, 10a-4p
Wyck Historic House
“Behind the Fence’’ Bee and Honey Festival
6026 Germantown Ave., Phila., PA. 19144
I had a great time at the last Wyck House garden festival on 8/10/13.
Wyck is like a little time-capsule and oasis in Philly, you forget you are
in a city on this 2.5 acre mini-farm!

•RiverCity Festival
Saturday 10/5/2013, 12noon-5p
at Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown, Philadelphia
1199 N. Delaware Ave., Phila., PA.
Super awesome historic park right on the
water of the Delaware River. In addition to craft
vendors, there will be a beer garden, food, live music,
and tons of other cool stuff.

I'll be adding more venues as they roll in, so stay tuned!

Here is Robo-Squirrel on a “Ka-zow-ee” cool Tie-Dye shirt new this summer!
Robo-Squirrel loves swirly Tie-Dye and Tie-Dye loves him right back!

Here is Robo-Squirrel on an even cooler over-all speckle pattern, which will be extremely
limited-edition --also new this summer. Woo-hoo! I am still working out
what other images I might print on these--I have the same speckly pattern on a series
of different shades of blue and blue-green shirts. Due to the small number
of T-shirts I have available in this new entity, for now they will likely only be offered
for in-person sales at art fairs I do this upcoming late summer, fall and holiday time.Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-89294072555062028182013-07-19T13:11:00.001-07:002013-07-19T13:28:45.404-07:00Kitsch Kitchen Bird --New Design

This is my latest new T-shirt print---much of it is also hand-painted.
It's based on a photo of a cool old vase I have hanging in my kitchen.
The colors are a little bright and not really all that naturalistic;
it is quite stylized, as I worked to approximate
the glaze colors on the vase.
So I call it “Kitsch Bird”.
I am pleased with it so far, although it is a bit labor-intensive to
produce. It's a good project to work on when I need to unwind
and be in the flow of it.Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-18961925380796252372013-05-28T11:16:00.002-07:002013-05-28T11:16:56.251-07:00Upcoming Sales venue announcement: I will be at Art for the Cash Poor 14 the weekend of June 7th for all 3 days! The latest T-shirt! An image of the historic O&W railroad station located in Middletown, New York.
The original photo was taken by my brother, Glenn Schwass. I love the Victorian architecture
style of the building. (Unfortunately it is abandoned and in bad shape at present, so perhaps this T-shirt image will help preserve its memory longer...)

I am currently getting ready for Fall craft sales, and anticipate selling my wares at
the Tyler craft sale (Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA) on October 12 and 13----
as well as participation in other to-be-announced art & craft sale venues from now through
the Winter/Holiday season. Time to be busy!
The above T-shirt design will very likely show up during at least one or 2 of these sales--
along with some new designs and some re-discovered older ones!Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-58310338647944358882012-08-13T16:25:00.002-07:002012-10-04T22:40:07.794-07:00finally, the 2nd annual mt.airy night market!

I just finished these discharge prints on black silk scarves.
This black dye has blue-ish undertones in it--so it turned out kind of like a
dark-field-cyanotype-batik effect. When the printed fabric is held up to light,
it is even more beautiful. I got to be more painterly in my working back selectively
into the first round of printing on the silk, as I discovered accidentally what would
further lighten the printing. The black dye is likely an acid dye, as it is hard to
get a solid black dye on silk. I plan to continue experimenting with dyeing
and discharge printing on different weaves of silk, since I have always loved
silk fabric.Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7864675275484246637.post-77742474759777109582012-07-02T17:37:00.001-07:002012-07-02T17:37:40.995-07:00Satin Devore’ scarves on their way!

Here is an in-progress view of my first foray into doing the Devore’ process of
burning-out patterns on silk/rayon scarves---which will then be dyed!
I print the fabric etch onto the scarf; it removes the rayon and leaves the
silk part of the cloth blend behind.
I am so psyched to do this process!! Stay tuned for the next step---full color!Laurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08658224448106195315noreply@blogger.com
